If you are in your 8th or 9th month, I suggest you pack your 'Hospital Bag' with all your personal stuff to avoid last minute hiccups. I packed my bag in the 9th month and carried it rightaway enroute our hospital. You might not find use to all of those but no harm carrying them all.
(P.S. - This list is not compiled by me but taken from various pregnancy sites)
Here goes the list -
What to pack for labour
Your birth plan and maternity notes - this might not be applicable in India.
Dressing gown - any nightgown would do in which you are comfortable, though the hospital will provide one for sure.
Slippers - to walk down the corridors if you are allowed to do so in early labor.
Socks - your feet get colder during labor. You might want to consider packing 1 or 2 pairs.
Massage oil or lotion if you would like to be massaged during your labour - this again might not be required.
Lip balm - please carry one if your lips get dry very soon. My lips get extremely dry in all weathers. I was applying a lip balm throughout.
Snacks and drinks for you while you are in labour - drinks like coconut water, water will do the trick for you.
Things to help you relax or pass the time, such as books, magazines, games and so on - though you may never be in a mood to actually enjoy doing any of those. In early labor it might be useful. TV did the trick for me.
Toiletries
Watch with a second hand to time contractions - you might want to consider carrying one.
Digital camera or camcorder - please check with the hospital beforehand, because not all of them allow them in delivery rooms. Mine did so we carried a digital camera.
Address book or a list of phone numbers you want to call and inform of the arrival of the little bundle of joy - again check with your hospital if they allow the use of cell phones. Snacks and
For after birth
A going-home outfit - you'll need loose comfortable clothes to wear while you're in hospital and for the journey home. It will take a while for your tummy to go down, so you'll be still wearing maternity clothes when you come home.
Tummy belt - carry one so you can start using one immediately after delivery. You will not be able to use one if you had undergone a C-Sec.
Nursing bras - take two or three.
Breast pads - if you are leaking. But just in case, carry a few.
Nightgown or T shirt - front opening shirts are useful in the early days of breastfeeding.
Toiletries
Towels, hairbrush, toothbrush and toothpaste.
Old or cheap knickers, or disposable knickers. Don't bring your best ones as they will get messy. If you end up having a caesarean, the NCT sells brilliant stretchy knickers that are comfortable to wear over your scar.
One outfit for the trip home - all-in-one stretchy outfits are easiest.
Two or three sleepsuits and vests for baby to wear while you are in hospital - sleepsuits keep the baby warm and cosy.
Baby blanket - wrapper is preferable to swaddle the baby.
Nappies
One pair of socks or booties - so the babies donot scratch themselves and keep them warm.
Hat or cap
Jacket for winter babies
Muslin squares
